Many thanks to City Archeologist Karen Brean, her team and all who came out on a bitterly cold Sunday to learn about the Canal System in Old Town North and it’s valuable contribution to the economy of Alexandria and the surrounding region in the 19th century.

“The Alexandria Canal was a significant feature on the city’s landscape from the 1840s into the 20th century,” said Eleanor Breen, City Archaeologist. “To have the opportunity to excavate, study, and record the massive stone lock and basin walls and the wooden floor is exciting.”

Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Need!

Many thanks to Old Town North Farmers and Hank’s Oyster Bar for ensuring none of the produce from the local farms or other local farms sold at the Old Town North Farmers Market goes to waste. At the end of the Sunday Market, Volunteers from the Old Town North Community Partnership and Volunteer Alexandria drop off produce that won’t carry over til next week with our friends at Hank’s Oyster Bar. The produce is stored in a refrigerator until it can be picked by the team from Alive and taken directly to one of the Alive Food Hubs in Alexandria. Many thanks to all involved in this new gleaning program!
